Here's my take on a great photo of Braves legend Warren Spahn.  I have been recently reacquainted with my old baseball card collection, and Spahn is one of my favorite players of his era.  When I saw the theme for the week, it made me think of this photo.  It's all in the eyes.  I used charcoal and pencil on sketchbook paper.

Mariners are having a rough start right now with their 6-13 W-L average so far. They had lost 7 games straight in the Texas Rangers and Indians series, and then another 4 straight last week.

Nothing like some Young Healthy Griffey to heat up the roster and get the game going at fullswing. If only some sort of miracle could take place and we turn those L into consecutive W's. I can't help it but it but just wonder if that will ever happen.

Oh and also, I was at the Seattle Mariners Store in Bellevue Square on Monday, and they said you can get Centerfield bleacher seats for only $7 now. So cheap, but it just means you would be going to the game in disappointment. Either way, win-loss, no matter, I will always enjoy watching them regardless. After all, it's my hometown team.

I am not a Yankees fan.....about as far from it as can be, actually.  But I bleed baseball, and I've been enamored with Babe Ruth since I was a kid.  An American icon.  The single most dominant player in the history of team sports.  More feared, revered and loved in his time than any other athlete ever.  He's been my answer to the "If you could meet any one person, from any point in history, who would it be?" question since I was 7....and if I ever do get that time machine, I know exactly where I'm pointing it.

Ruth led the AL in Home Runs 12 times.  But what always astounded me is how he did it, and the time in which it was done.  In 1919, Ruth led the league with 29 HR.....the next closest to him hit 10.  In 1920, Ruth's first season with the Yankees, George Sisler was second in the league with 19 HR....... Ruth hit 54!

Hank Aaron, easily one of the greatest players ever, and the All-Time Home Run King (until modern medicine took over), hit 755 HR in his career, 41 more than the Babe.  Aaron did that in 12,364 at bats........3,965 more than Ruth.  Project Ruth's totals over the same number of at bats (which is silly, I know)....you get 1,051 HR (not to mention, 3,258 RBI).

And as sick to my stomach as he makes me, I'll even do the same with Barry Bonds.  Bonds hit 762 career HR (roughly 317 of which were, um, juicy....that we know of).  That was over 9,847 career at bats.  Give Ruth that many ABs......you get 837 HR.


And here, have a look at the greatest (statistical) season ever, Ruth's 1921 campaign:

.378 AVG, 59 HR, 171 RBI, 177 R, 457 TB, .512 OB, .846 SLG, 145 BB


I could go on forever.....so I'll stop.

Treebeard, Some Call Me

This week's theme, chosen by me, is The Lord of the Rings. Plenty to pick from there, right?

My favorite character is Treebeard. I don't know why.

Super rush job on this one, as I'm heading out to the Toronto ComiCon Fan Appreciation Event in Toronto this weekend. I probably would have skipped a week, but when it's your choice you gotta do one. If you're gonna play lumberjack, you gotta hold up your end of the wood.

My Kirby Alphabet

Inspired by Langridge's Kirby Alphabet last year, I decided to do one of my own. I learned several valuable lessons.
1) Never curse any inker that worked with Kirby. Vince Colleta is now off the hook. These guys had to be saints, because this stuff is insanely complicated.
2) Galactus' helmet is some kind of unsolvable geometry problem.
3) Ink wash is for tough guys. I am not a tough guy.
4) I loved Kirby before. Now I love him more. The elegance of his design and execution becomes more apparent when you try and duplicate it. The guy was a genius. Deep, deep genius. Glad I picked him. I won't make that mistake twice. Hope you enjoy my folk art attempt to honor the King.
